Research from: Andrew Lester & Associates
Sector: Business Services & Logistics

The main objectives of this tracking study are to provide an overview of market size and carrier shares in the key product segments at a realistic price. Andrew Lester & Associates’ methodology for monitoring large markets allows cost-effective research, and because data is captured continuously and reported in four parts over a twelve-month period, shifts in customer loyalty and the impacts of marketing campaigns can be detected.

One of PacTrac’s unique features is that it is based on primary research with real users, thereby providing an external view of the marketplace. The deliverables include a complete electronic data-set of respondent profile information, so that while the research analysis provides strategic marketing insight – the user records delivers a tactical sales tool – every three months.

Product Definitions

Parcels and packets are defined as individually addressed documents and parcels sent using Courier, Express or Parcel services. They could be part of a multiple parcel shipment (MPS), but they exclude normal letter mail, palletised freight and items requiring special handling (hazardous or temperature sensitive goods). In the 2003-2004 programme we feature selected questions about individually addressed parcels that are palletised.

Research Content

The core questionnaire focusses on capturing key commercial market indicators for profiling the size and characteristics of the marketplace – Weight, Speed and Destination: • Volumes sent • Average weights • Destinations (Domestic, International by Country) • Preferred delivery times by geographic zone (7 different service levels) • Brand usage share and carrier churn • Parcel content (merchandise vs documents/samples) Country Coverage Countries covered in the PacTrac 2003-2004 research programme, together with the annual survey sizes are shown in the table below:

Private Questions & Other Countries

There is also scope for additional client-confidential questions to be added to the main questionnaire and reported separately. Other countries can also be surveyed upon request.

Interview Programme

There are four waves of interviews conducted continuously over three-month periods, with 500 or 375 interviews completed each wave (depending on quota size). Information is collected through CATI-based telephone interviewing. Sample is extracted from ALa’s in-house Master Contacts Database of international shippers that mirrors the business demographics of each country. Seventeen years’ experience researching the logistics marketplace has resulted in an expertly trained team of interviewers and analysts, fully conversant with the terminology, products, services and key players in the industry.

Research Deliverables

• Annual summary of estimated volume market size (PowerPoint slide-set);

• Complete response data-set in Excel (including company names, ISIC sector, employee size and post codes, but protecting respondent identity);
